Due to having no coating, bare copper wire will oxidize and patina/tarnish over time and will need regular cleaning (with a copper cleaning agent). Snake chain necklaces and linked chain extenders used with pendants and bracelets are made of color-plated brass; as such, they are affected by the elements: air, water, body oils, lotion, perfume, etc., and will tarnish overtime with normal wear.
